Life's Driving Strength

by Mary, written for Lydia

"Dance is a delicate balance between perfection and beauty."

"Nice job." Justin looked up as he carefully put the ballet shoes into his bag, pulling out a sweatshirt instead and pulling it over his head and saw his roommate standing above him. Standing up, Justin buttoned his jeans and folded his black dance pants to place over the shoes.

"Thanks," he responded, twisting the cap off his water bottle and taking a long sip. "You too, man. You headed back to the room?" Jordan nodded and Justin got up, sliding the strap of his bag over his shoulder. "Let's go." They walked together silently down the stairs and past the dancers lounge where someone walked out the door and straight into Justin. "Ouch, oh, I'm sorry."

"My fault," and Justin's head shot up at JC's voice. He looked from Justin to Jordan and back again in recognition. "How was the first day?"

Justin shrugged but Jordan grinned, "Tough, I'm not going to lie. My respect for you guys went up even higher after just one day of this." JC stared at him in question. "It's good though," Jordan continued. "All the hard work, it wouldn't be the same without it."

JC nodded at him, "It'll be worth it for some of you, especially if you work hard at it."

"Oh, I will," Jordan promised.

"And you?"

Justin nodded, "Of course. I always work hard." JC nodded once more at them and left them without another word, heading towards the front doors. "Okay, hi big diva," Justin said under his breath and he was surprised when Jordan laughed. "What?"

"Of course he is, he's the best thing to ever grace ABT. Who wouldn't be a diva like that?" Justin laughed with his roommate and said yes when Jordan asked if he wanted to stop for food before heading back. "He's pretty cute though." Justin's head turned sharply towards Jordan in the brisk spring air. "Oh, come on."

"Yeah," Justin agreed. "I didn't know that you—"

"How many of us aren't? It's rare, you have to know that."

Justin nodded, "Is?"

"Joshua Chasez? I don't think he could be straight if he tried." Jordan nudged Justin and they began laughing again as if they hadn't just met three days ago.
